You’ve had to come across at least once, whether a Muslim or an atheist, who tried every excuse to eliminate the fact that Jesus truly was the Son of God. From personal convictions or references to the Quran, they keep asking for proof that this statement is factual.
You must familiarize yourself with at least 3 types of sources if you want to successfully provide a strong case for what God spoke through His Word.
1. God and the spirit world testify to Jesus as the Son of God.
God Himself announces Jesus as the Son of God during Jesus’ baptism. Mark 1:11: “And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”
We see this again directly where God reaffirmed it at the mount of transfiguration. Mark 9:7: “Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son. Listen to him.”
Even demons and unclean spirits recognized and acknowledged it in Mark 3:11. “And whenever those possessed by evil spirits caught sight of him, the spirits would throw them to the ground in front of him shrieking, “You are the Son of God!”. We see this again in Mark 5:7: “With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!”
2. Jesus Himself said He was the Son of God.
As you study the Gospel of Mark and even beyond into other Gospels, there’s 3 approaches taken to explain He was the Son of God:
Jesus taught it. Mark 12:1-12: Parable of the Tenants.
Jesus hinted at it. Mark 13:32: “However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.”
Jesus confessed it. Mark 14:61-62: “But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
3. Non-believers recognized and confessed Jesus was the Son of God.
The Roman centurion himself seeing everything that was happening with Jesus recognized something different. In Mark 15:39, “when the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man truly was the Son of God!”. It doesn’t take much to see it and believe it. Even though some didn’t want to face this truth, the death of Jesus was truly supernatural as it testified in ways to reveal His deity.
Speak Scriptures and reference the Word of God. A rebuttal and an argument can feel emotionally draining and exhausting. You and I were called to proclaim the Gospel and not to prove a point. As you share Christ in your discussions, remember to use the Scriptures as much as possible rather than your own opinion. This reveals the nature of the Father who is able to open their eyes by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Remember, always be ready in season and out of season. Be equipped with Scriptures and specific references as you share the Gospel. Given this question is at the top of the non-believer’s list, it’s worth grasping the general ideas that God, Jesus, and even non-believers confessed His Sonship. As you recall these sources who testified Jesus, memorize some of these Scriptural references for each category and allow the Holy Spirit to do the rest.
Keep up the work of the evangelist.
